Future Orientation: Development and Ecological Perspectives synthesizes a wealth of theory and empirical data to explore future thinking as both a developmental process and an individual one. Starting with its origins in childhood, the book identifies the forces that affect this evolution, from early interactions with parents to personality traits and self-processes. The major aim is to understand how young people construct their future-oriented goals and the plans related to them as a means of navigating into adulthood, how these efforts are determined by their previous life history, and the extent to which they think future-orientation will influence their later lives.

The term “future orientation” can mean different things in different contexts.
