Crude Oil vs Natural Gas Crude oil and natural gas are fossil fuels that are used for heating. They are both formed from the remains of dead plants and animals. Both oils have similar uses but may differ in the effect and outcome of their use. Oil and natural gas systems encompass wells, gas gathering and processing facilities, storage, and transmission and distribution pipelines. These components are all important aspects of the natural gas cycle—the process of getting natural gas out of the ground and to the end user. LNG accounts for only 10% of total natural gas traded across the globe, yet its rate of growth is almost twice as fast as pipeline gas, making it an important part of the portfolios of major oil and gas companies. But while the process of piping natural gas to market is relatively straightforward, the LNG value chain is more complex. Typical products carried by gathering pipelines include; natural gas, crude oil (or combinations of these 2 products), natural gas liquids, such as ethane, butane and propane. In a gathering pipeline, raw gas is usually carried at pressures of approximately 715 psi. Crude oil and natural gas are both energy commodities. As such, we use these fuels to heat and cool our homes or supply other energy needs. The price relationship between crude oil and natural gas is an inter-commodity spread, in which the prices between the two change in relation to each other. The oil and gas pipelines sector includes companies that transport fuel, including natural gas and crude oil, through pipelines. These companies also collect and market the fuels. Natural gas is a fossil fuel, though the global warming emissions from its combustion are much lower than those from coal or oil. Natural gas emits 50 to 60 percent less carbon dioxide (CO2) when combusted in a new, efficient natural gas power plant compared with emissions from a typical new coal plant [ 1 ].
The pipe used for oil and natural gas pipelines can range in size from two inches to 42 inches in diameter. Natural gas distribution pipelines may be constructed from steel or plastic. Oil pipe sections are constructed in lengths between 40 and 80 feet and are designed specifically for their intended location in the pipeline.
