But one figure paints a darker picture: U.S. national debt. Gross federal debt stands at a massive $21.2 trillion. Economists and policymakers are increasingly urging the U.S. government to address the debt now while the economy is on solid footing and before the next crisis hits. In the Obama years alone, it surged from $6.3 trillion to $14.4 trillion. In debt-to-GDP terms, the public debt rose from 75 percent when Trump took office to 76.4 percent as of the third quarter of 2018. As a contrast, that level rose from 47.5 percent at the start of Obama’s term to 75 percent when he left. It took only six months for the U.S. national debt to go from $20 trillion in September of 2017 to top $21 trillion in March, a quick clip that has little precedent over the nation’s recent history. Using 2,000+ data points on national debt and economic growth in 20 advanced economies (such as the United States, France, and Japan) from 1800 to 2009, the authors found that countries with national debts above 90% of their economy (GDP) averaged 34% less real annual economic growth than when their debts were below 90% of GDP.
