Api of crude oil

API gravity moves inversely to density, which means the denser an oil is, the lower its API gravity will be. An API of 10 is equivalent to water, which means any oil with an API above 10 will float on water while any with an API below 10 will sink. Light – Light crude oil has an API gravity of 31.1 °API or higher. Medium – Medium crude oil has an API gravity that ranges between 22.3 °API and 31.1 °API. Heavy – Heavy crude oil has an API gravity that ranges between 22.2 °API and 10 °API. The Basics of Crude Oil Classification. Liquid petroleum pumped from oil wells is called “crude” or "crude oil.". Composed predominantly of carbon, crude oil contains approximately 84 to 87 percent carbon and 11 to 13 percent hydrogen. Crude oil also contains varying amounts of oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, and helium.

Mechanical impurities  Generally speaking, oil with an API gravity between 40 and 45° commands the highest prices. Above 45°, the molecular chains become shorter and less valuable to refineries. Crude oil is classified as light, medium, or heavy according to its measured API gravity. Light crude oil has an API gravity higher than 31.1° (i.e., less than 870 kg/m 3) After decades of decline, crude oil production in the United States has recently been increasing rapidly. Horizontal drilling and multistage hydraulic fracturing are now utilized to access oil and natural gas resources from shale rock formations that were previously either technically impossible or uneconomic to produce. The American Petroleum Institute reports inventory levels of US crude oil, gasoline and distillates stocks. The figure shows how much oil and product is available in storage. The indicator gives an overview of US petroleum demand. If the increase in crude inventories is more than expected, API gravity is one of the key characteristics of crude oil that, along with other characteristics such as sulfur content, is used by refiners when evaluating different crude streams for processing into petroleum products.
